Dover -Gateway to Europe

Dover, not just one of the busiest seaports in the world but a place of maritime heritage and of important military significance in the security of Great Britain.
THE EASTERN DOCK
The port itself ,presented with a Royal Charter in 1606, has been the subject of massive investment and now boasts 21st century state of the art facilities coupled with excellent service and transport links.
The Straits of Dover have been at the forefront of its history ,sometimes bloody but always fascinating. The nearby towns of Deal and Sandwich are also indelibly linked with its past .

The famous ‘White Cliffs of Dover’ provide a dramatic view when sailing the short 22 miles from the continent or indeed passing through the channel. Immortalised by the likes of Dame Vera Lynn they are a spectacular place to visit and are probably one of the most photographed and famous stretches of coastline in the county, if not the world. Combined with the remarkable coastal countryside the area is a nature lovers paradise and a great place to explore or relax.
THE WHITE CLIFFS
Dover has other historic landmarks including its Castle which is administered by English Heritage and offers a remarkable insight into England’s past. There are a maze of tunnels ,dug into the cliffs during the middle ages, and the castle has seen almost continuous military action from the iron age until the second world war when it housed a command centre ,used for the co-ordinating the Dunkirk withdrawal ,and an underground hospital.
VIEWS FROM AND ACROSS THE CASTLE
The Castle has been enlarged considerably since it was used in Anglo-Saxon times ,firstly by William of Normandy and then Henry 11in the 1180’s who laid out what is the basis for all that we see today.

Also visit Dover Museum to see the remains of a bronze age boat which is believed to be the worlds oldest known seagoing vessel.

It is well worth visiting the White Cliffs Countryside Project website to find other interesting facts and events in the surrounding countryside .
