Art and identity in West Kent

Bringing together photographs, art work and first-hand experiences, this exhibition tells the story of life in rural West Kent from a personal perspective. The show is the culmination of an on-going project that seeks to explore the meaning of Gypsy identity and express it through art.

The exhibition has been created in partnership with Mascalls Art Gallery and Maidstone Museum & Bentlif Art Gallery. It forms part of a touring show that aims to bring original and relevant, cutting-edge contemporary art to West Kent. The show will include work by Delaine le Bas, fresh from her success at the Venice Biennale.

How Peach Robinson's Victorian photographs anticipate the digital age

Henry Peach Robinson, pioneer of art photography, was a man ahead of his time. Working from his Great Hall Studio in Tunbridge Wells, he created striking images of an imagined past and an idealised present. Combining landscapes and domestic interiors with ‘human interest’, his work was admired by art critics and captivated the public. In the 1850s he developed the ability to blend multiple images into a seamless whole. His emphasis on ‘making’ rather than ‘taking’ pictures intrigued his contemporaries and prefigured today’s techniques of digital manipulation. The exhibition combines original works from the Museum collection with a contemporary photographic response.

Ideas and Innovation

A community celebration of Museums and Galleries Month 2008

A special exhibition to celebrate Museums and Galleries Month 2008 on the theme of Ideas & Innovation. Over the past months three contemporary artists have been working with three local groups to create their own original piece of artwork on the national theme. Using the Museum and Art Gallery’s collections as a springboard for exploring and developing the theme, the resulting exhibition will be full of some very different ideas!
