The City of Rochester Kent
A City of History
Between London and the channel ports near the mouth of the river Medway lies Rochester, an ancient cathedral city which has been attracting admiring visitors for many years.
Charles Dickens spent part of his youth here and returned to live as a well known author and featured this lovely city in works such as Great Expectations and The Pickwick Papers. As you wander through the streets there is abundant evidence of his presence, with many plaques on buildings detailing how he weaved the particular site into his novels. Names of some of his characters are also to be found if you wander around some of the local graveyards!
Dickens ,of course, was not the only writer to pen a word or two about Rochester. Samuel Pepys recorded the city in his diaries whilst witnessing the Dutch raid on the Medway in the mid 1600’s
The wonderful late Gothic and earlier Norman architecture in Englands second oldest Cathedral helps provide an inspirational day for its visitors. The Romanesque façade is one of the finest in the country.
Norman architecture is also abound in the dramatic setting of Rochester Castle which is open daily throughout the year. It is one of the best preserved fortresses of the Norman era in the country. As a vital royal stronghold , it was besieged many times throughout the centuries. At 113ft its keep is one of the tallest in England.

Restoration House is one of the finest pre-Civil War town houses anywhere and with its fine art and collection of English furniture it is a must see for the visitor to Rochester.
For a further insight into the history of the Medway towns try and pop into the Guildhall Museum, free admission and so much to see.
And finally, don't miss the Dickens Festival normally held during May/June each year and the Dickensian Christmas events around November/December
