Kent Garden of England
With landscapes ranging from the North Downs to Romney Marsh and edged with long stretches of interesting coastline, Kent has much to enjoy .
Why is Kent called the Garden of England? History has it that the term was coined from the time of Henry the Eighth when many acres of Apple and Cherry trees were planted by the royal fruiterer‘s. The land was extremely fertile and the climate mild and the growing of Hops soon also became a major farming industry for the brewing trade. Many workers from North Kent and London temporarily moved onto the land during the picking season and this was still a source of extra income for them right up until the 1960’s.

Many of the fine Orchards which once flourished are now gone due to competition from abroad but a trip through the countryside at ‘Apple Blossom ‘ time is still a treat for many and fine Kentish fruit can be bought at farms, and by the roadside, throughout the county when harvest time arrives!
